One of the most remarkable events in Assateague’s history is the Ash Wednesday Storm of 1962. The devastation that the island, and Chincoteague in particular, experienced is chronicled dramatically in “Stormy, Misty’s Foal,” Marguerite Henry’s sequel to “Misty of Chincoteague.” The storm brought tremendous destruction in particular to Ocean Beach, a development that, had it been completed, would have changed the island forever. This video from the National Park Service, “Saving Assateague,” is must-see for those who care about saving Assateague today. Thanks to Kelly Taylor of the National Park Service’s team at Assateague Island National Seashore for helping to put this together and letting us post it.
